CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, a blind person's other senses did not somehow step up to make up the difference for the loss of sight. Gale hoped to be a superhero, but for now her senses of hearing, taste, touch, and smell were the same as everyone else's.

At the same time, the fact was that the loss of sight meant that that instead of one-fifth of her attention going to each of her senses, one-quarter did. So while she didn't hear any more than she had when she still enjoyed her sight, she definitely paid better attention to what she did hear.

Just like she was paying attention now. She could taste the mud in her mouth, splashed up in microscopic bits by the rain that splashed down so hard it sounded like a million tiny explosions, coming over and over again and sending dirt and dust flying in wet particles that coated Gale's teeth and tongue.

The rain itself had a clean, free taste, a feel on her skin that reminded her of rainy days when she came home from school to find Grams waiting with a tray of hot chocolate or some cookies that she laughingly insisted she had "made" – in spite of the fact that they all tasted exactly like Chips Ahoy, and Gale could hear the crinkle-crunch of the plastic tray in the bag as Grams put the remaining chocolate chip cookies back in their package and sealed it tight until it was time to "cook" again.

The rain was good. The mud was foul. The dark itself did not scare her, any more than the sound of her own breathing or the feel of her favorite jeans. The dark was both a thing she felt and a place she lived. It wasn't good or bad, it just was.

Everything else here, though, terrified her. She knew the ins and outs of her own block intimately, and even the neighborhood Albertson's where Daddy did all their grocery shopping held no mystery or fear. But this place, this wild place, was a thing made one-hundred-percent of the unknown. The grass that swished and sighed as they passed through it created a strange pull each time she waved her cane in front of her. It made it harder for her to distinguish obstacles, things she could step over or things she would have to swerve to avoid.

The sounds were strange and loud. She heard the hum and chirrup of insects. She heard the panting of Mr. Eberhardt, the muttered curse words Miss Dancy kept grinding out between clenched teeth. She heard her father's small noises of pain, and felt him cant to the side as his hurt leg threatened to go out from under him.

She heard Grams, too. She was breathing hard just like Mr. Eberhardt, only with Grams, Gale worried that the breathing might signal something worse than just being out of breath. Grams was super-old, and who knew how long she could put up with this?

That was what decided Gale to move forward, no matter what.
